I have a DVD Player/recorder that I just bought and now I see Blu-ray is going to take over. Can I play a Blu-ray disc in my regular DVD player??? Or will I have to buy a new player?

NO, a standard DVD player cannot play Blu-Ray DVD’s. In order to play Blu-Ray DVD’s, you have to get a Blu-Ray DVD player.

    A Blu-Ray DVD player can play both standard DVD’s and Blu-Ray DVD’s.

You really don’t have to worry because standard DVD’s will most likely still be produced for a couple of more years before everything is Blu-Ray only.

You cannot play blu ray on your dvd recorder.
But you can play your recorded dvd (and regular ones) on a blu-ray player.
You don’t need a blu ray player if you don’t have a HDTV.

Well the Blu ray disk has to much memory for a regular DVD players to read it so they make Blu ray players for the increase in memory including the 1080 quality which would also not be supported so you need a Blu ray player.

See, there’s the problem. It’s a lot like two people you’ve barely ever heard about, having a fight, and one of them winning. So what? Does it really matter to YOU whether a Lamborghini or a Ferrari is better than the other? Especially since neither one is parked in YOUR garage?

It’s been a fight between two hi-def formats, neither of which has ever played in a standard DVD player/recorder. And most people are still buying/renting standard DVD’s. So, whoever won the hi-def format war is only meaningful to companies and techno-geeks. And the relatively few people who’ve just GOT to spend their money as soon as possible on any/every new gadget that comes out.

To answer your question, you never could play a Blu-Ray disc (or HD-DVD either) in your player. And no, you will not have to buy a new player anytime within the next few years.

noooooooo u must buy a new blue-ray dvd player. howeva u can play normal dvds on a blue-ray dvd player, but not hd ones. You’ll need an hd dvd player if u wanted 2 play them dvds (dont get one tho as no more hd dvds will be produced)

No Blue-ray doesn’t play on regular DVD machines. Blue-ray won over HD DVD but is still far away from beating regular DVD (if you play a Blue Ray on a regular TV it will look just like a normal DVD so it’s a waste of money unless you buy a HDTV which are too expensive for the average family).

Relax, movies studios will keep selling movies in the DVD format for a very long time.
