I thought the difference between bluray and hd dvd was just the format itself and not the picture quality.
Why is it that Bluray can do 1080p but HD DVD cannot?

No, Blu Ray is actually a better format. HD DVD has nothing but the name going for it, and that’s one of the major reasons why it wasn’t adopted by the market. Sony is huge now, and nobody can really compete against them. Sony can release movies, albums, and games all on their own proprietary format, whereas Toshiba makes very little other than electronics.
I’m platform agnostic, but I do have to worry about Sony’s domination of multiple markets. It could be bad for consumers, if they decide to push heavy DRM. On the other hand, I’m glad the better format won, this time.
