ucla54 asked:

Do blu-ray players automatically up-convert standard dvds? or do I need to look for a DVD player that up-converts as well?
So otherwise, does a blue-ray player have the same functionality that an up-covert dvd player has?

A Blue Ray DVD player will allow you to play standard DVD’s but it wont play them in HD/1080P

Blue Ray disks will play at the higher standard.

If you mean will blu-ray play normal dvd’s, yes they will, it’s called backwards compatible, but if you try to play a Blu-ray in a normal dvd player it will not work.

Yes. Both BluRay and HD-DVD’s up-convert the standard def video. It’s not really HD, but it is up-converted.

Think of up-converting as using a magnifying glass on a postage stamp to make it fit a larger size. Sometimes it tries to fill in the blanks to make it look smoother and more solid – but it cannot really put information back into the 1940’s video standard.
